We source our xylitol from non-GMO birch and corn.
You've probably noticed that most of our Earthpaste varieties contain the natural sweetener xylitol. We use xylitol because it gives Earthpaste a yummy flavor and it promotes healthy teeth. But we're often asked where our xylitol comes from. So for those of you who are curious, here's a quick rundown...
There are currently two primary sources of commercial xylitol— birch and corn. We use a combination of both in Earthpaste.
Birch xylitol is processed using the pulp from birch trees in paper mills in the US, Europe, and China. Birch isn't a GMO crop, so all birch xylitol is non-GMO. Corn is a common GMO crop. But we only use corn xylitol that's non-GMO certified.
Just like with many other natural products on the market today, there are a variety of opinions about the advantages and disadvantages of xylitol. But we think xylitol's advantages outweigh any disadvantages, especially when it comes to oral health.
A 2017 research review, for example, found that xylitol was an effective strategy for preventing tooth decay. And other research shows that xylitol helps maintain a neutral pH level in the mouth and prevents bacteria from sticking to teeth. Less acid and fewer bacteria equal a healthy mouth!
Unfortunately, xylitol doesn't have the same benefits for animals. In fact, it's downright dangerous to certain pets like dogs and ferrets. So keep your Earthpaste somewhere your furry family members can't reach it!
Do you prefer a toothpaste without xylitol?
We know some people prefer to avoid xylitol due to sensitivities or other concerns. If you're one of them, we recommend our Unsweetened Spearmint Earthpaste, which doesn't contain xylitol or any other sweeteners.
