At this point, there’s conflicting advice about whether consuming caffeine during pregnancy is safe. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (as well as several other health organizations in the U.S. and Europe) currently says pregnant women can safely consume up to 200 milligrams of caffeine per day. And the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says nursing women can consume up to 300 mg per day.
However, a 2020 research review published in BMJ Evidence Based Medicine found that consuming any caffeine during pregnancy is linked to low birth weight and miscarriages. There's also evidence that caffeine consumption depletes the body’s supply of a carbohydrate called inositol. Inositol deficiency in pregnancy is linked to neural tube defects.
Breastmilk is also naturally rich in inositol. But caffeine can drain a nursing mother’s inositol supply, leading to inositol depletion in both mother and baby. Inositol is critical to your baby’s health and low levels could lead to health complications.
Because of all these potential risks, we don’t recommend Re-Lyte products that contain caffeine to our pregnant and nursing customers.
