Research shows tea tree oil is one of the most beneficial essential oils for supporting a healthy mouth.
We use a variety of essential oils in Earthpaste but tea tree oil is probably the most important of them all. You see, the other essential oils we use in Earthpaste make it taste good (and they have a few oral health benefits too). But tea tree oil has a long list of impressive benefits that can help you maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Tea tree oil is an essential oil extracted from a small, shrubby tree native to Australia—Melaleuca alternifolia. It's been used medicinally by people for centuries for a variety of conditions.
This powerful essential oil contains over 100 natural compounds, and some of these compounds have proven antiseptic properties. Studies show that these compounds can help prevent strains of bacteria that are linked to periodontal disease and cavities from sticking to your teeth.
There's also evidence that rinsing your mouth with a tea tree oil mouthwash can help lower the number of bacteria in your mouth, as well as help reduce the signs of gingivitis like bleeding gums. Research demonstrates that tea tree oil could help against fungal oral infections like candida as well.
Our Quality Guarantee
The tea tree oil we chose to use in Earthpaste follows Redmond’s guiding principles: 100% pure essential oil that wasn't farmed or sprayed with pesticides. We believe nature has it right, and the tea tree oil we chose aligns closely with this philosophy
Is Tea Tree Oil Safe?
There's a lot of debate out there about whether tea tree oil is safe for internal use. We're not doctors, so we're going to bow out of that discussion. What we can tell you is that the small amount of tea tree oil in Earthpaste is absolutely safe, especially since you're not swallowing it.
Tea tree oil really only poses a health risk when it's undiluted. And the tea tree oil in Earthpaste is extremely diluted. Just how diluted is it?
Let's put it this way—if your tube of Earthpaste were as long as a blue whale, the tea tree oil would be shorter than a honeybee.
Each tube of Earthpaste contains 0.0174 milliliters of tea tree oil, which is 0.00353 teaspoons, or roughly half a drop. Let’s say you get 50 amazingly natural teeth-brushings from each tube. Each time you brush, you’ll have 0.0000706 of a teaspoon of tea tree oil on your toothbrush.
Still feeling unsure?
We’re sold on the safety and benefits of using tea tree oil in Earthpaste, but we understand if you’re not. Fortunately, Earthpaste Lemon Twist is there for you. It has all the benefits you’d expect from Earthpaste, a fresh, citrusy taste, and no tea tree oil — the perfect option if tea tree oil isn’t your thing.
